I started taking diving lessons nearly 30 years ago in Kenya. When you are under water you are detached from your everyday life beyond the border of watery world. I marvelled at the freedom of movement without thinking of the body’s weight, and yet always conscious of the air emerging from the oxygen tank. These aspects of the experience of diving opened new dimensions within my work.
Look at Water – it has neither definite colour nor shape, with its beauty of transparency and fullness. It awoke my awareness to start painting the series of “under water life” But it took some time till I could find a satisfactory access to its uniqueness through painting. It was more than 20 years ago in Saudi Arabia, during a period of frequent diving in the Red Sea that I found the technical means and became ready to put these impressions on silk. I found silk to be just the right material to express the characteristics of water.
